![]() Boy, what I would give for a friend like Michael (De Niro). A group of friends being torn apart by the Vietnam war, you really believe it happened and these were actual people. The whole setting in Pennslyvania was also super interesting. Some of the dialogue touched me as it was unfolding - the first movie to ever do that for me on a character level. Their performances made you believe they were real, working class people. But just the way everything happened was interesting. ![]() Without De Niro, Walken, Streep, and others, this would be a bad movie. It seemed silly as a concept.īut looking past that, the thing that really sells this movie is the characters. I guess you can take it as a metaphor, but I think it was a mistake to have it be the main plot point. It was never really used during the Vietnam war, and the concept of a big money gambling den involving Russian roulette would just never happen in real life. I honestly am not sure if the Russian Roulette stuff made a lot of sense. It seemed like an odd mishmash of ideas, but somehow it worked. After the movie ended, my mind kept spinning between totally different feelings and thoughts in a way no movie has done before. Recently saw Deer Hunter for the first time.
